You don't have to actually like Cher to at least respect her for having the chutzpah and sheer resilience to overcome any number of ill-conceived moves (most of which she acknowledges with wry self-deprecation), including bad records, disastrous relationships, embarrassing infomercials, and enough cosmetic surgery to underwrite several surgeons' Beverly Hills manors. This 90-minute concert, filmed in Las Vegas in '99 and subsequently broadcast on HBO, is Cher in all her kitschy glory. She's a performer, not just a singer (a good thing, given her limited if distinctive voice), and the show gives us the requisite array of Bob Mackie costumes (Valkyrie and vamp, pirate and prostitute, and one item that she herself describes as "Bozo the Clown meets Braveheart"), wigs galore, a host of beautiful bodies writhing about onstage in what might charitably be called "interpretive dances" (also known as "filler while the star changes outfits").... Oh, and there's music too, from the old hits ("Half Breed," "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves") to "Believe," the late '90s techno-dance smash that here is saved until last, with a few covers thrown in for good measure (U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"? Go figure). We also get some old Sonny & Cher TV clips (bet you didn't remember that Ronald Reagan and David Bowie appeared on their show), highlights from her very impressive film career, still photos, drawings of Mackie's creations, and the "Walking in Memphis" music video. All in all, it's a weird, extravagant, campy stew, and a heck of a fun ride. --Sam Graham

Eisley's debut full-length Room Noises is exactly what fans of their 2003 EPs Laughing City and Marvelous Things were hoping for--a shimmering, bittersweet blast. Concocted by three sisters, their brother, and their best friend, the band's sound recalls the melodic whimsy of artists like The Cardigans, Belly and The Sundays. Their take is more straightforward though, as bright moods light up even the most plaintive ballads; the minor chords of "Lost At Sea," for instance, get cracked open by Sherri and Staci DuPree's crystalline tandem vocals, allowing one of the record's many glittery hooks to burst through. It's like that all the way in fact, as song after song gives birth to a new earworm. The drawback is a lack of diversity which keeps those sunny, delicious moments from having the impact they should. Part of the blame lies with the too-clean production, which you can hear the band trying to break out of here and there (listen to the warped beginning to "Plenty of Paper"). But there's no need to be perfect straight out of the gate, and there are worse things than listening to a band play to their strengths. -Matthew CookeAtists: Eisley

Alexandre Dumas's classic tale of fraternal squabbling makes a more than satisfactory transition to celluloid with this 1976 made-for-television swashbuckler. Viewers familiar with the more recent Leonardo DiCaprio version may be stymied at first by the non-MTV pace and the rather unhip presence of Richard Chamberlain in the lead role(s). This well-lensed actioner overcomes a somewhat pokey first half to emerge as a terrific adventure, complete with plenty of derring-do, some sharply pointed dialogue, and a wonderful performance by the incomparably malevolent Patrick McGoohan. Rousing fun for burgeoning rapscallions of all ages. Director Mike Newell would later find success in a different genre with Four Weddings and a Funeral. Ian Holm, Louis Jordan, and Ralph Richardson round out the embarrassingly rich supporting cast. --Andrew WrightDirector: Mike Newell

Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives more than 12 minutes screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). While not graphic by today's standards, some of the scenes--baby boys being ripped from their mothers' arms and slaughtered, nails being driven into Jesus' hands--may disturb young and/or sensitive children. --Kimberly Heinrichs Director: Franco Zeffirelli
